The art of Frans Snijders consists of, in addition to hunting scenes, still lives, amongst which are grandiose market scenes and still lives with fruit. These paintings are a delight for the eye, though are also an important source of information on the habits of eating of the 17th-century citizen. Fruit was an important part of the daily menu of the wealthy patrician and was usually served with game. This exquisite fruit basket refers to the welfare of this temporary armistice, in which the Schelde was also opened for a while, which was an economic boom for Antwerp.
